Bundles of Ten

Counting a large group one object at a time is slow and easy to lose track of. Bundling objects into groups of ten first makes counting much faster — and it's exactly how a two-digit number is built.

Definition — Place Value

The value a digit has because of its position in a number. In a two-digit number, the left digit stands for a number of tens, and the right digit stands for a number of extra ones.

A number like 42 means 4 bundles of ten plus 2 leftover ones — not 4 and 2 as separate, unrelated digits. Each bundle of ten is worth exactly ten single objects, no matter how the objects are bundled.

Worked Example — Counting by Bundles

A pile has 3 full bundles of ten straws, plus 6 loose straws. How many straws in all? Each bundle is 10, so 3 bundles is 10 + 10 + 10 = 30. Add the 6 loose straws: 30 + 6 = 36. There are 36 straws.

Worked Example — Breaking a Number into Tens and Ones

The number 58 is made of how many tens and ones? The digit 5 is in the tens place, so there are 5 tens. The digit 8 is in the ones place, so there are 8 ones. 58 equals 5 tens and 8 ones, or 50 + 8.

Ten ones can always be traded for one bundle of ten, and one bundle of ten can always be broken back into ten ones — they're worth exactly the same amount.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating the digits of a two-digit number as two separate small numbers, thinking 42 means '4 and 2' rather than 4 tens and 2 ones.

    Read the tens digit as a count of ten-bundles, not as a single object. In 42, the 4 stands for 40, not 4.

  • Miscounting when more than 9 loose ones are left over, forgetting they form another bundle of ten.

    Whenever there are 10 or more loose ones, group 10 of them into a new bundle of ten before finishing the count.
