A jar has a group of buttons. Counting them one at a time gives fifty-three. Written as a numeral, fifty-three is 53 — a 5 in the tens place and a 3 in the ones place.

Worked Example — Reading a Numeral Aloud

The numeral 108 is written on a card. Read it aloud: one hundred eight. It represents a group of 108 objects — 100 objects plus 8 more.

For any two-digit number, the first digit tells how many tens, and the second digit tells how many extra ones. For 53, that's 5 tens and 3 ones.

  • Writing a number's digits in the order they're spoken rather than in place-value order, such as writing 'seventeen' as 71 instead of 17.

    Say the number slowly and think about tens and ones separately. Seventeen is 1 ten and 7 ones, so it's written 17, with the tens digit first.
