Counting Past 100

You already know how to count a group of objects one at a time. This lesson stretches that same counting skill further — past 20, past 100, all the way to 120 — and starting from any number, not just from 1.

The counting sequence follows a pattern. After each group of ten (29, 39, 49...), the next number starts a new decade (30, 40, 50...). Once past 99, the pattern continues the same way: 100, 101, 102, and on through 120.

Worked Example — Counting On from a Given Number

Count forward starting at 47. Continue the sequence: 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52. Notice that after 49, the count moves into the 50s, the same pattern used after every group of nine.

Worked Example — Counting Through 100

Count forward starting at 97. Continue the sequence: 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102. The pattern doesn't change at 100 — it keeps going the same way it did at every other decade.

Tip

If you get stuck partway through a decade, like after 64, think about what single-digit number comes after 4. Since 5 comes after 4, 65 comes after 64.

Common Mistakes

  • Skipping directly from a number like 29 to 40, missing the 30s entirely.

    After any number ending in 9, the next ten-number is the very next decade in order — 29 is followed by 30, not 40.

  • Losing the pattern around 100, such as counting 98, 99, 200 instead of 98, 99, 100.

    100 comes right after 99, the same way any decade follows the number ending in 9. After 100, the pattern of the 100s continues: 101, 102, 103.
