Covering a Flat Shape
Length measures the distance along one direction. Area measures something different — how much flat space a shape covers. Just like length needs a unit to measure with, area needs a unit too: a small square of a fixed size, called a unit square.

For a rectangle, counting every unit square one at a time isn't necessary — the unit squares naturally form rows and columns, which means the same multiplication used for arrays applies directly. The area of a rectangle equals its length times its width.
