Graphs Where Each Bar Represents More Than One

In earlier grades, a bar graph's bars each represented a count of exactly 1. A scaled bar graph is more powerful — each unit of a bar's length can represent any fixed amount, like 2, 5, or 10, letting a graph display much larger numbers in a compact space.

The fixed amount that each unit of length on a bar graph represents, shown in the graph's key. A scale of 5 means each unit of bar length stands for 5 items.

To read a scaled bar graph, first check the scale in the key. Then, for any bar, count how many units long it is and multiply by the scale to find the actual value it represents.

Worked Example — Reading a Scaled Bar Graph

A bar graph's key shows a scale of 5 per unit. The bar for 'basketball' reaches 4 units. How many students chose basketball? Multiply the units by the scale: 4 × 5 = 20. 20 students chose basketball.

Worked Example — Comparing Two Bars on a Scaled Graph

Using the same scale of 5, the 'soccer' bar reaches 6 units and the 'basketball' bar reaches 4 units. How many more students chose soccer than basketball? Find each value: soccer is 6 × 5 = 30, basketball is 4 × 5 = 20. The difference is 30 − 20 = 10 more students.
