Reading a Clock

A clock is a tool for measuring time, the same way a ruler measures length. Instead of one number, though, a clock uses two hands moving around a circle of numbers to show what time it is.

The short hand on a clock is the hour hand, and it points to (or near) the current hour. The long hand is the minute hand, and it shows how far through the hour the time is — pointing straight up (at the 12) means exactly on the hour, and pointing straight down (at the 6) means half past the hour.

A clock's minute hand points straight up at the 12, and the hour hand points exactly at the 3. Since the minute hand is at 12, the time is exactly on the hour — the hour hand shows which hour, so the time is 3:00.

A clock's minute hand points straight down at the 6, and the hour hand is a little past the 7, halfway to the 8. The minute hand at 6 means half past the hour — the time is 7:30.

At the half hour, the hour hand is never pointing exactly at a number — it's always sitting halfway between two numbers, leaning toward the next hour.

Reading the hour from wherever the hour hand is closest to, even when it has moved halfway toward the next number at the half hour.
Check the minute hand first. If it points to the 6, the hour is the earlier number the hour hand is leaving, not the number it's approaching.
