Sorting Things into Groups

A big mixed pile of objects is hard to make sense of at a glance. Sorting the objects into categories — and then counting each category — turns that messy pile into information that answers real questions.

Definition — Category

A group that objects are sorted into because they share something in common, such as color, shape, or type. Every object in a data set belongs to exactly one category.

To organize a group of objects, first decide what categories make sense — for a pile of fruit, that might be apples, bananas, and oranges. Then sort every object into one of those categories and count how many ended up in each one.

Worked Example — Sorting and Counting a Group

A basket has a mix of fruit: 5 apples, 3 bananas, and 4 oranges. Sorting them into three categories and counting each: apples has 5, bananas has 3, oranges has 4. Comparing the counts, apples is the largest category and bananas is the smallest.

Worked Example — Answering a Question from Sorted Data

Using the same fruit basket (5 apples, 3 bananas, 4 oranges), how many more apples are there than bananas? Compare the two counts by subtracting: 5 − 3 = 2. There are 2 more apples than bananas.
