A Rate That's Always Out of 100

A store sign reads '25% off.' Before reading on, think about what that 25 is actually comparing — 25 out of what?

Definition — Percent

A special ratio that always compares a quantity to 100, meaning 'per hundred.' 25% is exactly the ratio 25:100.

Because every percent shares the same second quantity — 100 — a percent is really just a ratio table entry that's already been scaled to land on 100. That means the ratio-table skill from the last lesson works directly: to find a percent of any quantity, scale the ratio 'percent:100' up or down until the 100 becomes the actual quantity involved.

Worked Example — Finding a Percent of a Quantity

Find 25% of 60. The ratio 25:100 needs to scale so that 100 becomes 60. The scale factor is 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6. Apply that factor to 25: 25 × 0.6 = 15. So 25% of 60 is 15.

Worked Example — Finding What Percent One Number Is of Another

18 out of 24 students passed a quiz. What percent is that? Scale the ratio 18:24 so the second quantity becomes 100: the scale factor is 100 ÷ 24, so 18 × (100 ÷ 24) = 75. 75% of the students passed.

Tip

A percent under 100% always gives a result smaller than the original quantity, and a percent over 100% always gives a result larger — a quick way to check whether an answer is at least in the right range.

  • Dividing by the percent number instead of by 100 when converting a percent to a decimal or fraction, such as treating 25% as 1/25.
