Measuring the Space Inside a Box

Area measured how much flat space a shape covers, using unit squares. Now think about a real box, like a shoebox — how would you measure how much space is inside it, not just the size of its flat top? What kind of unit do you think would work, based on how a unit square worked for area?

Definition — Volume

The amount of space a solid figure occupies, measured by counting how many unit cubes (cubes of a fixed size) fill it completely, with no gaps or overlaps.

The same way a unit square was the natural tool for area, a unit cube is the natural tool for volume — a small cube of a fixed size used to fill a solid figure. Instead of one flat layer of squares, filling a box takes several stacked layers of cubes, one layer for each unit of height.

Worked Example — Counting Unit Cubes

A box is filled with unit cubes arranged in 3 layers, with each layer containing 4 rows of 5 cubes. How many unit cubes fill the box? Each layer has 4 × 5 = 20 cubes. With 3 layers: 20 × 3 = 60. The volume is 60 cubic units.

Worked Example — Connecting Volume to a Repeated Area

A box's base is covered by a layer of 15 unit cubes, and the box is 4 layers tall. What is the volume? Since every layer covers the same base area, the total is 15 unit cubes per layer, repeated 4 times: 15 × 4 = 60 cubic units.

Volume is always measured in cubic units, like cubic inches or cubic centimeters, since it counts unit cubes — a different kind of unit than the square units used for area or the plain units used for length.

Common Mistakes

  • Counting only the cubes visible on the outside surface of a box, missing that cubes fill the entire inside as well.

    Volume counts every unit cube that fills the solid completely, including the ones hidden inside — not just the ones visible from the outside.

  • Reporting a volume answer in square units or plain units instead of cubic units.

    Since volume counts cubes, always report it in cubic units — cubic inches, cubic centimeters, and so on.
