Place Value Beyond a Thousand
Place value has grown from tens, to hundreds, to thousands in earlier grades. It keeps extending the same way for even larger numbers — ten thousands, hundred thousands, and beyond — using the exact same bundling idea each time.
Large numbers are grouped into periods of three digits, separated by commas: ones, thousands, millions, and so on. Within each period, the same hundreds-tens-ones pattern repeats, which is why reading a large number is really just reading several smaller three-digit groups in a row.
