Place Value Beyond a Thousand

Place value has grown from tens, to hundreds, to thousands in earlier grades. It keeps extending the same way for even larger numbers — ten thousands, hundred thousands, and beyond — using the exact same bundling idea each time.

Large numbers are grouped into periods of three digits, separated by commas: ones, thousands, millions, and so on. Within each period, the same hundreds-tens-ones pattern repeats, which is why reading a large number is really just reading several smaller three-digit groups in a row.

Worked Example — Reading a Large Number

Read the number 452,318 aloud. Separated into periods: 452 (thousands) and 318 (ones). Read each period like a three-digit number, naming the period: four hundred fifty-two thousand, three hundred eighteen.

Worked Example — Comparing Two Large Numbers

Compare 384,502 and 384,619. Both numbers have the same digits in the hundred-thousands, ten-thousands, and thousands places (384), so compare the next place over: the hundreds digit. 5 hundred versus 6 hundred — since 6 is more than 5, 384,619 is larger. So 384,502 < 384,619.

Tip

Reading a number one period at a time, from left to right, and saying the period name (thousand, million) out loud after each group makes even very large numbers manageable to read correctly.

Common Mistakes

  • Misplacing the comma or period boundaries in a large number, making it hard to read the groups correctly.

    Count digits from the right in groups of three, placing a comma after every third digit, to correctly mark the ones, thousands, and larger periods.

  • Comparing large numbers by looking at the total number of digits alone, without actually comparing matching place values when both numbers have the same number of digits.

    When two numbers have the same number of digits, compare place by place from the left, just like comparing any smaller multi-digit number.
