Switching Between Units

The same length, weight, or amount of time can be described using different-sized units within the same system — like feet and inches, or hours and minutes. Converting between them uses multiplication or division, based on how the two units relate.

When converting from a larger unit to a smaller one, multiply by the number of small units in one large unit, since the amount takes more of the smaller unit to describe the same total. When converting from a smaller unit to a larger one, divide instead.

Worked Example — Converting from a Larger Unit to a Smaller One

Convert 5 feet to inches, knowing there are 12 inches in 1 foot. Since converting to a smaller unit takes multiplication: 5 × 12 = 60. 5 feet equals 60 inches.

Worked Example — Converting from a Smaller Unit to a Larger One

Convert 180 minutes to hours, knowing there are 60 minutes in 1 hour. Since converting to a larger unit takes division: 180 ÷ 60 = 3. 180 minutes equals 3 hours.

Tip

Think about which direction makes the number bigger or smaller to check the conversion: switching to a smaller unit should always give a larger number, and switching to a larger unit should always give a smaller number.

Common Mistakes

  • Multiplying when converting to a larger unit, or dividing when converting to a smaller unit — the reverse of the correct operation.

    Converting to a smaller unit always means multiplying (more of a smaller unit are needed), and converting to a larger unit always means dividing (fewer of a larger unit are needed).

  • Using the wrong conversion relationship, such as using 10 instead of 12 for feet to inches.

    Check the exact relationship between the two specific units being converted before multiplying or dividing — different unit pairs have different relationships.
