Classifying Shapes by Lines and Angles

With points, lines, rays, parallel lines, perpendicular lines, and angle types all understood, shapes can now be classified with real precision — not just by their number of sides, but by the specific relationships between those sides and angles.

A shape's sides can be parallel, perpendicular, or neither. Its angles can be acute, right, or obtuse. Combining these observations gives a much more detailed classification than counting sides alone ever could.

Worked Example — Classifying a Quadrilateral by Its Sides

A quadrilateral has exactly one pair of parallel sides, and the other two sides are not parallel. What is this shape called? A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides is a trapezoid.

Worked Example — Classifying a Triangle by Its Angles

A triangle has one angle measuring 95 degrees. What kind of triangle is it, based on that angle? An angle greater than 90 degrees is obtuse, so a triangle containing that angle is called an obtuse triangle.

Worked Example — Identifying Right Angles in a Shape

A quadrilateral has four sides where every pair of adjacent sides is perpendicular. What does that tell you about its angles? Perpendicular sides meet at a right angle, so every angle in this quadrilateral measures 90 degrees, making it a rectangle.
