Understanding what multiplication means is the first step. Fluency — being able to recall a fact quickly without stopping to add groups one at a time — is what makes multiplication genuinely useful for solving bigger problems.

A few strategies turn an unfamiliar fact into an easy one. Skip counting builds a fact by counting up by the same number repeatedly. Doubling a known fact finds a new one — since 4 is double 2, 4 × 6 is double 2 × 6. Facts involving 10 are especially fast, since multiplying by 10 just adds a zero.

Worked Example — Skip Counting to a Fact

Find 6 × 5 by skip counting by 5s, six times: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30. The sixth number reached is 30, so 6 × 5 = 30.

Worked Example — Doubling a Known Fact

Find 4 × 7 using the known fact 2 × 7 = 14. Since 4 is double 2, double the product too: 14 × 2 = 28. So 4 × 7 = 28.

Facts with 9 have a pattern worth memorizing: for 9 × n, the digits of the product always add up to 9, and the tens digit is always one less than n. For 9 × 6 = 54, the tens digit (5) is one less than 6, and 5 + 4 = 9.

Common Mistakes

  • Skip counting the wrong number of times, landing one count short of or past the correct product.

    Match the number of counts to the second factor exactly — for 6 × 5, count by 5s exactly 6 times, keeping track on fingers if needed.

  • Relying only on counting from scratch for every fact, even ones already practiced many times, which is slow and easy to miscount.

    Try to recall a practiced fact from memory first, and fall back to a strategy like doubling or skip counting only when the fact doesn't come quickly.
