Finding a Nearby Round Number

Sometimes an exact number isn't needed — just a close, easy-to-work-with estimate. Rounding replaces a number with the nearest round number, like the nearest ten or nearest hundred, using place value to decide which round number is closer.

Definition — Rounding

Replacing a number with the nearest multiple of ten, one hundred, or another place value. The digit immediately to the right of the rounding place decides whether to round up or down.

To round to the nearest ten, look at the ones digit. If it's 5 or more, round up to the next ten; if it's 4 or less, round down to the current ten. Rounding to the nearest hundred works the same way, but looks at the tens digit instead.

Worked Example — Rounding to the Nearest Ten

Round 43 to the nearest ten. The ones digit is 3, which is less than 5, so round down. 43 rounds to 40.

Worked Example — Rounding to the Nearest Hundred

Round 368 to the nearest hundred. The tens digit is 6, which is 5 or more, so round up. 368 rounds to 400.

A quick way to check rounding: picture the number on a number line between the two nearest round numbers. Whichever round number the original number sits closer to is the answer.
