Fractions Have a Place on the Number Line

A shaded picture shows a fraction as part of a shape. But a fraction is also a number, with an exact location on the number line, the same way whole numbers do — it just usually falls between two whole numbers instead of landing on one.

To place a fraction on a number line, divide the distance from 0 to 1 into as many equal parts as the denominator says, then count over from 0 by the numerator to find the fraction's exact point.

Worked Example — Placing a Fraction Between 0 and 1

Locate 3/5 on a number line. The denominator, 5, means the space between 0 and 1 is divided into 5 equal parts. The numerator, 3, means counting over 3 of those parts from 0. The point 3/5 sits three-fifths of the way from 0 to 1.

Worked Example — Recognizing a Fraction Equal to a Whole Number

Where does 4/4 sit on the number line? The whole from 0 to 1 is divided into 4 equal parts, and all 4 of them are being counted, which means reaching exactly the point 1. So 4/4 is located at the same point as the whole number 1.

Every fraction where the numerator and denominator are the same number, like 4/4 or 7/7, is always located at exactly 1 on the number line, since it counts every equal part of a single whole.

  • Spacing the marks on the number line unevenly when dividing it into fifths or thirds, leading to an inaccurate location for the fraction.

    Divide the space between 0 and 1 into equally spaced marks first — matching the denominator — before counting over to place the fraction.
