Shapes Can Belong to More Than One Category

In earlier grades, a shape belonged to one clear category based on its defining attributes — a triangle, a square, a pentagon. This lesson shows that shape categories can overlap: a single shape can correctly belong to more than one category at the same time.

Definition — Quadrilateral

Any shape with exactly 4 straight sides. Squares, rectangles, and rhombuses are all specific types of quadrilaterals, each with additional defining attributes beyond just having 4 sides.

A square has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. Because it has 4 sides, it's a quadrilateral. Because it also has 4 right angles, it also counts as a rectangle. A square is a member of all three categories at once — it doesn't have to pick just one.

Worked Example — Sorting a Shape into Multiple Categories

A shape has 4 sides, all sides equal in length, and no right angles. Is it a quadrilateral, a rhombus, or a square? It has 4 sides, so it's a quadrilateral. Since all 4 sides are equal, it's also a rhombus. But since it has no right angles, it doesn't qualify as a square, even though it's still both a quadrilateral and a rhombus.

Worked Example — Deciding a Category Doesn't Apply

A shape has 4 sides of different lengths and no right angles. Which categories does it belong to? It has 4 sides, so it's a quadrilateral. But since its sides aren't all equal and it has no right angles, it isn't a rhombus, a rectangle, or a square — it's simply a general quadrilateral.

Check the broadest category first (does it have 4 sides at all?), then check more specific attributes one at a time (are all sides equal? are all angles right angles?) to see which narrower categories also apply.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming a shape can only belong to one category, such as insisting a square 'isn't really' a rectangle because it already has its own name.

    A shape belongs to every category whose defining attributes it satisfies. A square satisfies a rectangle's defining attributes (4 sides, 4 right angles), so it genuinely is a rectangle too.

  • Assuming every quadrilateral must be a rectangle or rhombus, when it may not have any of those extra defining attributes.

    A shape only belongs to the narrower categories whose specific attributes it actually has — a general quadrilateral with unequal sides and no right angles belongs only to the broadest category.
