Shapes Can Belong to More Than One Category
In earlier grades, a shape belonged to one clear category based on its defining attributes — a triangle, a square, a pentagon. This lesson shows that shape categories can overlap: a single shape can correctly belong to more than one category at the same time.
Definition — Quadrilateral
A square has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. Because it has 4 sides, it's a quadrilateral. Because it also has 4 right angles, it also counts as a rectangle. A square is a member of all three categories at once — it doesn't have to pick just one.

Assuming a shape can only belong to one category, such as insisting a square 'isn't really' a rectangle because it already has its own name.
